A New Year, A Better Arts & Econ

January 01, 2015

Arts & Econ began as the website for the conference Genius for Sale! Artistic Production and Economic Context in the Long Nineteenth Century at Wolfson College, Oxford in May 2014. The choice of a general rather than specific domain name was deliberate. The co-organizers had a vague idea of using a digital forum to continue conversations started while planning the conference. The success of Genius for Sale! and the eager participation of speakers and attendees made it clear that the exploration of the intersection of art and economics was just beginning. In this spirit, Arts & Econ was converted into a website with a more general scholarly mission to publicize events and studies that—like Genius for Sale!—sought to bridge the gap between humanities and the social sciences.

While there were some blog posts and updates provided in the wake of the conference, there have not been enough. This changed in 2015. From now on, there will be at least two new posts per month. It will also, hopefully, serve as the website for future events bringing together scholars from a wide variety of disciplines who are using quantitative methods to study the arts, exploring the influence of economic context on artistic production or using economic theory to interpret art and literature.

If you are involved in or know about any interesting projects in this emerging field that you think should be featured on artsandecon.com, please email Diana Greenwald at Diana.Greenwald@wadh.ox.ac.uk
